The next few days were more of the same. Cold and distant responses from Hunter to everything I sent or said to him, and he kept me busy with menial tasks or errands to run for him with Wade. It was getting annoying as well as off-putting, and making it so that I didn’t really know if this was going to work out. I couldn’t just ignore my feelings, and I didn’t know how to bring them up with him.

Had he just lost interest? That fast?

A long day was coming to a close, a Friday where everyone else in the building had skipped out before five. Hunter and I were still there, though, with me going through a draft of a press release and Hunter with edits as I went. He was also on the phone with multiple people in what seemed like an insane rotation of calls.

When the calls finally stopped, I saw him stand, grabbing his coat. I couldn’t take it anymore.

I needed to know what was going on.

I crossed into his office from mine as his back was turned and when he faced me, I could see in his face that he knew something was coming. He seemed to sigh and go to his desk, putting his laptop into its case and gathering his things.

“Yes?” he asked.

“What the hell is going on?” I asked.

He stopped, smirking. “So, I guess the façade is off now?” he asked.

“We’re the only ones here,” I said. “It’s Friday. You’re lucky to have anyone else in the building after four. It’s currently eight.”

“I thought it was dark outside,” he said. “Well, you finished that last edit, right? You can just send it to me and I’ll revise when I get home.”

“I didn’t mean the press release,” I said. “I meant us.”

“Us?” he asked.

“Yeah,” I said. “You and me. And whatever was going on that suddenly stopped a few days ago with no warning.”

“What was going on between us was inappropriate,” he said, but there was a gleam in his eye. Something that said he didn’t really care much about being inappropriate. That it was being caught that was the problem.

“So?” I asked. “That didn’t stop you from kissing me first. I thought something was happening between us. If it’s not, I’d like to know so I can just let that go.”

Hunter was silent, his ice-cold black eyes staring deep into mine as he sat heavily on the corner of his desk. Then he shook his head.

“What?” I demanded. “What is that head shake for?”

“You,” he said. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with you.”

I closed some of the space between us, putting one hand on the back of the high-back chair between us.

“What is that supposed to mean?” I asked. “Are you going to fire me?”

He stood, slowly, but purposefully. When he walked, it was deliberate, unhurried. When his hand closed over the leather of the chair and pushed it aside, clearing the obstacle between us, so it was just me and him, it was authoritative.
